The Asiatic Lion: The Last Kings of the Gir Forest

Once roaming across the Middle East and India, Asiatic lions now survive only in the Gir Forest of Gujarat, India. Smaller and shaggier than their African cousins, these lions live in family groups and are less social than African prides.

One lion, Sultan, became a legend in the Gir Forest for his incredible strength and leadership. Sultan defended his territory against multiple rivals, ensuring the survival of his pride. Unlike most lions, who prefer hunting at night, Sultan was often seen leading his pride during the day, adapting to the behaviors of their prey. Sultan’s resilience against poachers and human encroachment turned him into a symbol of India’s efforts to protect its wildlife heritage.

The Asiatic lion's story is one of hope: from a population of less than 50 in the early 20th century, conservation efforts have brought their numbers to over 600 today.
